Weekend Notes: Lake Tahoe with Old Friends, in BIRKENSTOCK · BIRKENSTOCK Everyday Walk

Sometimes the best weekends are the ones you don’t plan. Last month, a group of old friends and I piled into a couple of cars and drove up to Lake Tahoe for a long weekend. It wasn’t a big milestone or a special occasion—just a chance to reconnect, breathe mountain air, and trade our usual city sidewalks for pine-needle trails and lakefront boardwalks. For me, it was also a reminder of why I keep reaching for the same pair of BIRKENSTOCK sandals day after day, whether I’m on a plane, a hiking path, or a friend’s kitchen floor.

Packing Light: One Pair, Many Miles

When I travel, I try to pack as little as possible. That means one pair of sandals has to do a lot of work. For Tahoe, I brought my BIRKENSTOCK Arizona in a deep brown oiled leather. They’ve been broken in for years—the cork footbed has molded perfectly to my arches, and the straps have softened just enough to feel like a second skin. I wore them on the drive up, through the airport, and straight into the first coffee stop. No blisters, no pinching, no complaints.

The key, as always, is width. If you’re between sizes or have a slightly wider foot, go with the regular width. It gives your toes room to spread naturally, especially on long days. And when you’re walking around a new town, you want that extra space—it makes all the difference between a comfortable stroll and a hobble back to the car.

Hiking the Meadows: Cork Underfoot

Weekend Notes: Lake Tahoe with Old Friends, in BIRKENSTOCK · BIRKENSTOCK Everyday Walk detail

Our first full day, we set out for a meadow hike—nothing too strenuous, just a few miles of gentle trail with views of the Sierra Nevada. The ground was a mix of packed dirt, soft grass, and a few rocky patches. My AriZona handled it all. The cork footbed provides a firm, supportive base, and the deep heel cup keeps your foot stable on uneven terrain. It’s not a hiking boot, but for a casual walk, it’s perfect.

One thing I always tell people: don’t be afraid to get your BIRKENSTOCKs dirty. The cork footbed is naturally moisture-wicking, and a quick wipe with a damp cloth brings it back to life. After the hike, we sat by the lake, peeled off our sandals, and let our feet breathe. The water was cold, the sun was warm, and the day felt exactly right.

Lunch, Laughter, and Birko-Flor

We stopped at a tiny Mexican place for lunch, and the live band was so loud we had to shout to hear each other. At one point, I looked under the table and noticed my friend had swapped her usual sneakers for a pair of BIRKENSTOCK Boston clogs—the classic closed-toe style. She said she’d been wearing them all weekend, from the car ride to the hiking trail, and her feet felt great. That’s the thing about BIRKENSTOCK: there’s a style for every occasion. The Boston is a favorite for cooler days or when you want a little more coverage, but still want that signature cork support.

If you’re considering a pair with Birko-Flor, the synthetic nubuck alternative, don’t think of it as a compromise. Birko-Flor is durable, easy to clean, and often more affordable—perfect for everyday wear or if you’re testing out your first pair. Many people find it needs less break-in time than leather, too.

Mini Golf and the Bear Factor

Later, we tried mini golf at a course guarded by a giant wooden bear statue. It was ridiculous and fun—more laughter than skill. I had my Arizona on, and the flexible sole bent naturally as I lined up putts. No slipping, no sliding. That’s the beauty of the design: it moves with you, not against you.

That night, we cooked dinner and joked about bears. Then, at 2 a.m., a real mama bear and her cub wandered through the yard. We heard scratching at the window, and someone’s Ring camera captured the whole thing. I slept through it—my feet were so comfortable, nothing could wake me. In the morning, we laughed about it over coffee. Some people might find that scary, but for me, it was just another reminder that the best adventures are the unexpected ones.

If you’re planning your own weekend trip, here’s my practical advice: bring your BIRKENSTOCK, but also bring a second pair of shoes that have been broken in. You might want to switch things up if you’re doing a lot of walking. And remember to check the break-in period—don’t buy a new pair the day before a long hike. Give yourself at least a week of short wears to let the cork mold to your feet.

Whether you’re exploring a new city, walking your dog around the block, or taking a spontaneous trip with old friends, your feet deserve the support of a good footbed. For me, that’s always been BIRKENSTOCK. And after years of wear, they still look great—just a little more personal with every step.
