First-Week Break-In: What Actually Happens to the Cork Footbed

A new pair of BIRKENSTOCK Almina Raffia sandals is not supposed to feel like a pillowy sneaker on day one. The cork-latex footbed is firm, slightly cupped, and a little unforgiving until your body heat and natural walking motion start to soften and shape it. In the first week, the footbed begins to mold to the contours of your feet—especially under the heel, along the arch, and across the ball of the foot. The Almina Raffia, with its natural leather and synthetic raffia-like upper, adds a bit of structure that holds the foot steady while the cork does its work. Expect the first two days to feel distinctly “new”—you will notice the raised arch and the deep heel cup more than anything else. By day three or four, the cork starts to give just enough that the arch feels supportive rather than intrusive. By day seven, the footbed should feel noticeably more like it belongs to you. This is not a gimmick; it is the same cork-latex construction BIRKENSTOCK has used for decades, and it is why the break-in period matters. If you wear the Almina Raffia for 30–45 minutes on day one and gradually increase to a few hours by the end of the week, you give the footbed time to adapt without causing hot spots. Skip that progression and you may feel pressure points that make you want to take them off. The Almina Raffia is available in Black and Natural/White; both colorways use the same footbed, so the break-in timeline does not change with color.

Strap Fit: Adjusting the Almina Raffia Across the Instep and Toes

The Almina Raffia has a two-strap design with adjustable buckles—one across the instep and one closer to the toes. Getting the fit right is the difference between a sandal that feels secure and one that either slips off or digs into your skin. Start with the instep strap. It should sit snugly but not tightly; you want to be able to slide one finger under the strap without much resistance. If the strap is too loose, your foot will slide forward when you walk, and your toes will grip the edge of the footbed. That leads to fatigue and blisters. If it is too tight, you will feel pressure across the top of your foot, especially after a few hours when your feet naturally swell. The toe strap is more about keeping the front of the foot centered. It should hold the foot without pressing down on the toes. For many people, the Almina Raffia fits best when the instep strap is adjusted one hole looser than feels “secure” at first, because the cork footbed will drop slightly as it molds. Recheck the straps after the first two days and again after a week. The raffia-like synthetic material on the upper has minimal stretch, so the buckles do the work. If you have a high instep, consider going up half a size or using the wider buckle hole; if you have a narrow foot, the Almina Raffia may feel roomy, and you might need to tighten the instep strap more than usual. The Natural/White colorway shows scuffs a bit more readily than Black, but both clean up with a damp cloth and mild soap.

Walking on Hard Floors: What to Expect from the Almina Raffia

Hard floors—tile, concrete, hardwood, and laminate—are the real test for any BIRKENSTOCK sandal. Unlike carpet or grass, hard surfaces send every bit of impact straight up through the footbed. The Almina Raffia’s cork-latex footbed is designed to absorb some of that shock, but it is not a running shoe. In the first week, you will feel more of the floor than you might expect. That is normal. The footbed’s raised arch and heel cup encourage a more natural gait, but your feet are also adjusting to a firmer surface. If you wear the Almina Raffia on hard floors for long stretches, break up the time: 20 minutes indoors, then switch to another shoe, then back again. This is especially important if you are used to soft-soled shoes. The payoff comes after the first week, when the cork has started to contour to your heel and arch. At that point, the Almina Raffia feels less like a plank and more like a supportive base. On hard floors, the outsole provides decent traction, but be cautious on wet tile or polished concrete—the Almina Raffia is not a performance grip shoe. The Natural/White version has a lighter outsole that can show dirt, while the Black version hides it better. Neither is slippery by design, but common sense applies.

Sizing and Width: Getting the Almina Raffia Right the First Time

BIRKENSTOCK sizing is not the same as standard US sizing. The Almina Raffia follows the brand’s unisex size scale, and the footbed is shaped to allow your toes to sit inside the edge, not on top of it. When you first try them on, your heel should sit in the heel cup with a small gap—about 1/8 to 1/4 inch—behind your heel. Your toes should not touch the front edge when you stand. If they do, go up a size. The Almina Raffia is available in a regular width (the standard BIRKENSTOCK width) and a narrow width. The regular width fits most medium and wide feet; the narrow width is for slim feet. If you are between sizes, go with the larger size, especially if you plan to wear the sandals with socks or if your feet tend to swell. The Natural/White and Black colorways come in both widths, but availability can vary by retailer. Do not size down to get a tighter fit—use the straps for that. A too-small footbed will cause your toes to jam against the front edge and your heel to sit on the raised rim, which is uncomfortable and can lead to blisters. If you have flat feet, the Almina Raffia’s arch support may feel aggressive at first; give it the full week before deciding. If you have high arches, you may find the footbed feels just right from day one.

Materials and Everyday Wear: Natural Leather, Synthetics, and Raffia Look

The Almina Raffia upper combines natural leather with synthetic materials to create a raffia-like texture. This is not actual raffia—it is a durable synthetic that mimics the woven look while holding its shape better in wet conditions. The natural leather portions are typically found on the straps and footbed lining, where they add a soft, breathable feel. The synthetic raffia-like material is on the outer straps, giving the sandal a textured, summery appearance that works with casual outfits. The Natural/White colorway pairs a light, natural-toned upper with a white outsole and footbed trim, while the Black version is more understated and hides wear better. Both are easy to wipe clean. The natural leather will develop a patina over time, especially on the footbed lining where your feet rest. That is normal and part of the BIRKENSTOCK experience. The synthetic parts do not stretch much, so the fit you establish in the first week is largely the fit you will have long-term. If you wear the Almina Raffia daily, expect the footbed to darken slightly from moisture and oils. That is not a defect; it is a sign the sandal is molding to you. For cleaning, use a damp cloth and mild soap on the synthetic upper, and a leather conditioner sparingly on the natural leather parts. Avoid soaking the cork footbed—if it gets wet, let it dry away from direct heat.

First-Week Checklist for the Almina Raffia

Day 1: Wear for 30 minutes indoors on hard floors. Check that your heel sits in the heel cup and your toes have room. Adjust the instep strap so you can slide one finger under it. Day 2: Wear for 45–60 minutes. Pay attention to any pressure points on the top of your foot or toes. Loosen the toe strap if needed. Day 3: Wear for 1–2 hours. The cork should start to feel slightly more forgiving. If you feel sharp pain, stop and reassess sizing. Day 4–5: Wear for 2–3 hours. The arch should feel supportive, not painful. The heel cup should feel like it is holding your heel, not pinching it. Day 6–7: Wear for 3–4 hours. By now, the footbed should have begun to take on the shape of your foot. You may notice a slight indentation under your heel and along your arch. That is the cork molding. If you need to wear the Almina Raffia for longer than four hours in the first week, alternate with another pair of shoes to give your feet a break. Remember that the Almina Raffia is a lounge-fit sandal—it is designed for casual walking, not hiking or running. It is perfect for city streets, home floors, and weekend travel, but it is not a performance shoe. Respect the break-in period and the Almina Raffia will reward you with a custom fit that lasts for seasons. Both Black and Natural/White follow the same break-in path; choose the color that suits your wardrobe and lifestyle.
